Labour Day…….

Posted on

Labour Day in Canada is celebrated on the first Monday of September. It is part of a long weekend for most Canadians, and my husband and I made it an extra long weekend by taking Friday off too. 🙂

Did you know that traditionally, Labour Day was an occasion to campaign for and celebrate workers’ rights during parades and picnics organized by trade unions. These still play a role in Labour Day for some Canadians, but many people see the first Monday in September as an opportunity to take a late summer trip, perhaps to their cottage, or enjoy the company of family or friends at picnics, fairs, festivals and fireworks displays.

For teenagers and University and College students, the Labour Day weekend is the last chance to celebrate with a party or to go on a trip before school re-opens for the new year. To me Labour Day marks the end of summer……and the beginning of the new school year, a day I actually look forward to……it’s one last chance to get things done before routines go back to normal with work and school.

An old fashion related idea in Canada and the United States scorns at the wearing of white after Labour Day. The explanations for this tradition varies. The fact that white is a summer colour and Labour Day unofficially marks the end of summer, while also offering less protection against the start of the cooler temperatures is one potential explanation.

Apparently another related idea……in our house only,…….is about knitting. I started knitting a new baby sweater this weekend and my husband told me knitting projects can’t begin until after Labour Day, it’s like wearing white. He was kidding….I think…..but he isn’t really a big fan of my knitting projects as they “consume” me. He’s always waiting for me to “just finish this one row”, before we can go anywhere or do anything.

Today was a cool and cloudy day compared to the temperatures we had all summer……a chilly 15 degrees for most of the day. That actually worked for us. We laboured by getting the lawn mowed……it was in desperate need of mowing in some places but not so much in others due to the lack of rain all summer. We also laboured over a hot oven by cooking  a “roast beast” for dinner…..not something I like to do when it’s too hot, but today’s conditions were perfect for it, (ok it’s not really labour when you just pop it in the oven and it cooks itself). The meal was our “good-bye to summer”, “hello to fall” dinner.

As for the rest of this 4 day Labour Day weekend…….we did nothing, and it felt good!! 🙂
