An Awesome Day!…..

Posted on

What a great day!!

Mondays are not always my favorite day at work, especially this time of year when we are crazy busy and it’s payroll week and there are a million things going wrong, but today didn’t turn out so bad.

I was in the middle of having a minor melt down at work about some shelving units when my mom called me on my cell phone to wish me a happy birthday. She called my house this morning but I missed her call and didn’t check my messages before I left for work so she caught up with me at work….good timing, just what I needed, made my day a little bit brighter.

When I got back to the office after dealing with “issues” my boss said, “Let’s all go to Moxies for your birthday lunch.” Awesome!! Lunch on the boss……gotta love those surprises.

My office door...

Just as we were finishing up lunch my staff called me to stop by on my way back to the office because they had something they needed to discuss with me. This time of year a call like that usually means there’s a problem so I thanked my boss for lunch, excused myself and headed off to see what the problem was. When I got there my very thoughtful staff wished me a Happy Birthday and presented me with a beautiful bouquet of flowers.

My beautiful Birthday flowers from my thoughtful staff!!

After an eventful day at work, I came home, walked the dogs, and ate dinner (cooked by my husband). Then my son and his girlfriend came over and we had birthday cake!

My partly eaten birthday cake....yummmm.

All in all a very awesome day!!

Happy Birthday to Me…..

Tomorrow is my birthday…..I will be 49. It’s the birthday just before the big one, you know the big 5-0……That’s right, I’ve been around for nearly half a century. Boy has time passed quickly.

My husband asked me this morning how old I’m going to be…..He does know he was just verifying. It’s not nice to make someone older than they actually are……but he did say, “Wow are you really that old already?” I’m pretty sure what he meant by that was…. “It just seems like yesterday when we met and you were just a young thing of 37 then, how could these years have slipped by so quickly?”….. hahahaha.

I remember when I thought 50 year olds were OLD…..they seem so much younger now.

I think you are only as old as you feel…… so, some days I’m 25 and other days I’m 65, or 75 or maybe even 85…..but today I’m only 48…..since my birthday isn’t until tomorrow, and then I will only be 49. ūüôā

Opening birthday presents from my family last year (48)

Since it is Thanksgiving in the United States I thought I’d take the opportunity to think about what I am thankful for today.

  1. I am thankful that my puppies let me sleep in until 6:00 am this morning before waking me to go for their walk.
  2. I am thankful for a job that I enjoy, especially this time of year when everything is decorated and Christmas songs are playing over the sound system.
  3. I am thankful for great staff, customer service and Santa and Santa Helpers, who know what they’re doing so I don’t have to work late.
  4. I am thankful for my wonderful family to go home to and my wonderful husband who cooked dinner tonight and many other nights so I can walk the dogs early.
  5. I am thankful that we didn’t get the same snowstorm my friends and family in New Brunswick got…..although a little snow would have been ok.
  6. I am thankful for Meredith’s dad who offered to take Erika to soccer practice tonight and last night so I can stay home and relax with my husband.
  7. I am thankful for my snuggly, cuddly puppies.
  8. I am thankful that Erika does not have another roller coaster project due any time soon.
  9. I am thankful for Shana having her own car so I don’t have to take her to the mall tonight.
  10. I am thankful for my comfy couch to relax on while using my lap top to entertain myself until time to go to bed for what I am hoping is going to be a good night’s sleep.

Is Santa Real?…..

Posted on

What do you say to your children when they start to question the existence of Santa Claus?

I remember when Santa didn’t make sense to me…..all of the presents from Santa were wrapped¬†in the same paper as the gifts from Mom and Dad. What a coincidence that Santa had the same wrapping paper that my mom had. I needed to know how this was possible so I asked my mom about it and she gave me a very logical explanation for it. Santa didn’t have time to wrap¬†everything before he left the North Pole so she left her wrapping paper and tags out so he could wrap our toys when he got there on Christmas Eve. It sounded possible to me so I continued to believe. Later, as in when I was a bit older, my mom told me that Santa was the spirit of giving and anyone who believed in giving could be Santa. I think it was her way of saying it would one day become my job to be Santa for my own kids.

When my oldest son Ryan started to question if Santa was real or not he was probably about 6 or 7 years old. I told him that I believed in Santa but he could choose to believe or not. I could tell he wasn’t sure about it but he didn’t want to come right out and say he didn’t believe any more. Ryan was a huge fan of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and wanted everything “Turtles” for Christmas that year. The Turtle Sewer was a fairly expensive toy and I knew when I saw it Ryan would love it so I bought it for him as his Santa gift even though it was more money than I had budgeted for a single present. I could hardly wait to see his face on Christmas morning when he opened it. Well, he certainly did react to the present, but I’m not sure to this day if I was happy about it or a little dismayed about it. He ripped that paper off the box and as soon as he saw what it was he made this announcement….. “Now I know for sure Santa is real……there’s no way you guys could afford to buy this for me!”

Ripping it open

The gift that reinforced belief in Santa

You see what I mean…..happy that he didn’t give up his Santa belief just yet but a little sad that he thought we were too poor to buy it for him.

My kids are now 26, 23, 20 and 16 and even though they are quite well aware of the whole “Santa” deal, they still get a Santa gift along with their gift from us. I’m not sure you ever really stop believing in Santa.

So what do, or did you tell your kids when they started asking about Santa, and what were you told by your parents?

A Windy, Damp, but Warm Walk…..

It is November 20th and I am still walking the dogs in my spring jacket because it is so warm out……it was 12 degrees this morning.

Christmas is only 35 days away……Santa arrives at the Mall today…….and where is the weather that says “It’s here!!” ¬†We have no snow, the lawns are greener than they were all summer, and it’s too warm for winter coats, hats and mittens. I know I will regret saying that as one of these days I will wake up to a blizzard and I will start complaining about shovelling the driveway (if my husband reads this he will ask what I’m complaining about…..he’s the one that shovels the driveway), driving on slippery roads, freezing my butt off walking the dogs, and so on…..but a little bit of the white stuff would be nice.

I decided to take the trails today instead of the sidewalks for the dog walk this morning…..I took some pictures along the way but I just had my cell phone with me so they aren’t great but it sure doesn’t look like Christmas is just around the corner.

Fill in the blanks Friday – November 18, 2011…..

I got this idea from my friend Laura’s blog and thought it might be kind of fun to do……
1.¬†¬†¬†A nervous habit I have is ¬†– If I have a pen in my hand I tap it or click it…much to the annoyance of my husband and very likely everyone else around me.

2.¬†¬†¬†Something that makes me sad is ¬†– I’m sometimes a little bit sad that I haven’t been back to my old home since moving here over 11 years ago.
3.¬†¬†Today I am thankful for ¬† – Santa and the Elves details falling into place and ready to go on Sunday at my work….since it’s my responsibility to have them ready. ūüôā
4.¬†My favorite room in my house is – My living room because it’s the room my Christmas tree will be in…..after December 1st.
5.¬†¬†I can’t stand – waiting for people. When I am ready to leave and I have to wait for someone who is not quite ready to go…..not my husband, I never have to wait for him, it’s generally one of my children I am waiting for… bugs me.
6.¬†¬†If I had an extra $100 to spend on whatever I wanted today I would – buy a new outfit for my work’s Christmas Dinner.
7.  The last person I hung out with was Рmy husband, watching Whitney on TV.

Too early to decorate?…….

Posted on

While walking the dogs this morning I noticed a couple of houses have their Christmas trees up already…….decorated and lights turned on.

Do you think this is too early? I don’t even have my outside lights up yet! I never think of decorating or playing Christmas music before December 1st….although last year I did get my tree upon November 30th….but close enough.

I’ve been decorating my own family Christmas tree for 26 years….this years will be 27. For some reason it has always been me that trims the tree, including stringing the lights on. The kids will put on their own special ornaments after I have placed everything else. We have had a few “ornament clusters” over the years……you know what I mean, where the kids hang all of the ornaments on one branch (sorry kids but I have always moved them around after you have gone to bed).

Is your tree a “themed” tree…..where everything matches and you would see it in a fashion magazine?…..or is it a “chaos” tree? Mine have always been chaos trees…..where there is really no rhyme nor reason to whats on it and¬†every ornament I have ever bought, been given, or the kids have made has gone on the tree. I can’t imagine leaving any of them out.

These are a few of the trees my family has had over the years……odd shaped, real and fake:
