Fill In The Blank Friday Oct 19, 2012

Posted on

Here we are again……it’s Friday and time for “Fill In The Blank Friday”.  As always…another segment of Fill in the Blank Friday.  I link to my friend Laura’s blog My Little Blessed Life and the blog The Little Things We do.

1.  One thing I plan on doing to relax this weekend is   ….well since I have to work tomorrow morning (the joys of being short-staffed) I won’t be sleeping in but maybe I will try that on Sunday morning…..I might also do some knitting.
2.  A big pet peeve of mine is  people who complain about what someone does or doesn’t do and they do or don’t do they same things themselves but just don’t see it.
3.  I am really loving  how colourful the leaves are this fall, just when you think they are over you see more trees that have just turned.
4. The rain is   necessary of course but most enjoyable when you are lying in a tent at night listening to the rain hit it (providing the tent is not leaking).
5. My favorite girly indulgence is  chocolate.
6. A song I always get stuck in my head is whatever someone else is singing or humming around me…..and it stays with me until I pass it on to someone else by singing or humming it. 🙂
7.  The best cure for stress is  taking a long walk with the dogs….as long as they walk nicely and don’t get all excited when they meet another dog.

Fill In The Blanks Friday October 12, 2012

It’s time for fill in the blanks Friday again. Link to The Little Things We Do and My Little Blessed Life.

1.  My favorite flower is yellow roses if it’s a formal flower….I had yellow roses at my wedding and I got to scatter yellow rose petals over my dad’s ashes at his burial  so they have a special meaning to me,  but Four O’clocks if it’s just a regular flower because they come in a variety of colors  and I gather the seeds from them each fall and re-plant them from those seeds each spring.

2.  You should never talk about  how much money you make….or don’t make.
3.  My favorite discovery as of late is  how to use the Aperture setting on my camera. 🙂
4. This fall you will probably find me wearing  my new sweater that I started knitting today, if I manage to get it finished before winter.
5. I wish I were  the next Lotto Max grand prize winner.
6. My favorite TV show currently is   The Voice, I get a kick out of Adam and Blake.
7.  This weekend I want to  enjoy the rest of my vacation by just sitting around knitting my sweater (it’s supposed to be rainy this weekend)…..sort of granny like, I know.
That is it for this Friday!!

Here are a few pictures I took while out walking today.

Baking Day

Posted on

If all goes according to plan tomorrow all of my children will be home for Thanksgiving dinner along with Ryan’s girlfriend Whitney and possibly Shana’s friend Kristopher. We are starting to move into the larger scale holiday dinners as the kids are getting older. We have a little ways to go yet…..need some grandchildren to add to the mix.

My husband always says Thanksgiving is his favorite holiday of the year because it’s all about the food… too……but mostly the food. 🙂

I don’t normally do much in the way of baking for Thanksgiving, by the time we are finished eating the turkey and all the fixin’s there’s not much room left for the desserts……and our waistlines do not need it either. It’s always been much easier just to buy something from the bakery, I’m a bit lazy. 🙂

Today I decided to do my own baking…..mostly. I think I got the bake bug after making my apple pie yesterday.

The first thing I made was a marble cake (not from scratch…..a mix). We have 3 October birthday’s to celebrate….Whitney’s was on the 6th, Nick’s is on the 13th and Shana’s is on the 18th. Since they are all going to be here tomorrow we decided that it would be a good idea to celebrate them all together.

After baking the cake I peeled some more apples and got the apple pie ready to bake…..the first one was so good, I’m hoping this one will be too.

Apple Pie

Apple pie finished then on to the raspberry cheesecake. We can’t think of having Thanksgiving dinner without Grandma’s raspberry cheesecake. The recipe is my mother-in-law’s and while it’s probably not as good as hers was I like to think it’s a close second. What I like best about it is it’s a no-bake cheesecake.

No bake cheesecake before the raspberry topping

Raspberry Cheesecake…tradition.

I then made banana bread, only because I had some banana’s that needed to be used up or tossed out and since I was already in bake mode I decided I might as well make something with them.

Banana Bread

Last, but by no means least, pumpkin pie from Costco. There is no point in me trying to make a pumpkin pie to compete with how good this pie is. We were first introduced to this great pie when we were at my brother’s house in New Brunswick about 3 weeks ago.

Now clearly we do not need to eat as many desserts as we will have tomorrow but since this is the food holiday a few extra choices are not a bad thing.

We will go back to dieting again on Tuesday. 🙂

Fill In The Blank Fridays….October 5, 2012

Posted on

I used to be quite regular about doing this fun little fill in the blanks on Friday……yes I do know it is now Saturday…..but I haven’t done it for a while, but I like these “blanks”. I’ve linked this up with the blog The Little things we Do and also to my friend Laura’s blog My Little Blessed Life where I copy the blanks from.

If you have a blog and want to do this, she has instructions on her page, if you do this though, just make sure you link up at her blog.

1.  The last thing I ate was  a slice of my fist home-made apple pie for dessert last night (not my first, just the first one I tried in 27 years after my epic fail in 1985).

2.  The last time I went to the beach was  this past August 2nd when my husband and I took a vacation day and went to Collingwood to explore the caves and we spent the afternoon at Wasaga Beach.

3.  My last vacation was   in March when my husband and our youngest daughter Erika drove East to New Brunswick to visit my parents and other friends and family members during our March Break.

My mom and dad having lunch with us on our vacation.

4. The last place I drove was  ….. my husband usually does the driving when we go anywhere so the last place I actually drove myself was to work one day when I needed the car to go to an appointment.

5. The last song I listened to was  I can’t even recall actually listening to a song just for the sake of listening to a song…..whatever song was playing on the radio in the car last night when we went to Shoppers for cough drops for my husband who is suffering from a sore throat right now.

6. The last thing I watched on TV was   Blue Bloods.

7.  The last time I said “I love you” was  when saying good night to my husband…..I definitely need to say it more.

Last Week of Vacation

Posted on

This is my last week of vacation for this year…… 😦

After the girls left for school and work my husband and I took the pups for their morning walk…..later than I would normally go so I had to shower first. (I usually walk them while it’s still dark out so no one sees “my first thing in the morning” look.) Once we took the dogs back home we went on our own little hike on the trails near our house. The fall colors are fabulous…..I just hope they hang around long enough for “family pics” on Sunday.

After our beautiful fall hike it was time to use up some of those apples we bought at the Farmer’s Market. My first attempt at making an apple pie since 1985 when I was first married and my oldest son was just a baby. That did not turn out very well, so 27 years later I tried again. This time the result was fantastic.

And yes, we have dug into it already……before dinner. 🙂
